Madinah Arabic Flashcards Lesson #1

I recently started mini Arabic lessons with my children along with another sister's two children who stay in my neighborhood, Alhamdulillah. We are first learning basic conversational phrases such as "how are you?", "what is your name", "my name is.." etc. InshaAllah, we will begin Madinah Arabic soon so I made these flashcards to accompany the first lesson which you can find at Madinah Arabic inshaAllah. Hopefully all goes well and there will be more flashcards coming soon, inshaAllah :)

Thank You, Allah Coloring Book

I was looking online for worksheets or coloring pages on thankfulness for my little ones to teach them thankfulness to Allah and that everything comes from Him. Almost everything I found had either a turkey or a pilgrim on it lol so I just made my own. Alhamdulillah! I left spaces for them to draw their own picture. Enjoy, inshaAllah!

We are wrapping up the circulatory system now although it took much longer than I intended, Alhamdulillah. We had a few setbacks...ohh nothing too exciting...just that my car was stolen from a shopping center parking lot and then we took a small break from school for Eid, that's all :) Alhamdulillah for everything--the good and bad. My van aka swagga wagon, as I like to call it, is still missing but I made some cool circulatory system notebooking pages! LOL. Enjoy, inshaAllah!

The Importance of Tarbiyah and Islamic Education

Alhamdulillah I've always taught my children at home and they have never been in the public school system. At times, like most homeschooling parents, I have my doubts about keeping them at home. I wonder are they receiving the amount of knowledge at home that they would in public school? Are they learning enough? And then we always compare our children...do they know as much as so-and-so, etc. This is natural, I'm sure, to want our children to be better than others or more successful. Alhamdulillah then, after all the questions of self-doubt, the reason kicks in. I remember my intention, my vision for them, my hope for them. It's one thing and one thing only. Jannah. I remember that it's not about the secular education. It's about learning how to be and practicing to be good Muslims. Alhamdulillah, I always tell my children to rack up on their good deeds during this "practice" time Allah has given them.  Allah has so much rahma and He knows His creations so well that He knows they need practice to be good at anything. That is why He does not punish them for their sins yet but still rewards them for their good deeds manifold. They love it when I say they have a head start collecting their good deeds, mashaAllah. And it makes them feel secure when they feel bad about an action that Allah is going to forgive them for it because He is Al-Ghafoor, the All-Forgiving and He knows they are still learning, Allahu Akbar!

I want to raise my children to have strong hope and faith in Allah yet fear Allah's punishment. I want them to have good Muslim character and manners, to become teachers and offer guidance to their own family, to enjoin others to do good and forbid evil. Of course, I still make du'a for my children to be successful in the dunya but even more so for the akhirah. I am constantly remind myself of this when I feel the frustrations of educating my children. Allah has entrusted me with my children. They are my flock, my responsibility. I couldn't possibly pass them to someone else to take on this responsibility for me. I'm not saying that those who send their children to public school are merely passing on their children and releasing all responsibility, but I know for sure that when any one of us, let alone a child, spends 40+ hours with anyone, we better believe that we will be influenced by this person as the Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallam told us about the seller of musk, subhanAllah. To me, sending my children to public school is like gambling. You will never know the end result until it happens and when it does, it may be too late to get your money back!

Perhaps all this is innate and I'm just protective because I'm a mother. Maybe because I'm a Muslim mother but definitely because I grew up in the public school system and I was once a lost, misguided soul. Bad combination I would say. Alhamdulillah for Allah's Guidance!

Wellllllll, with all this rambling, what I wanted to really do is share with you this video. My eldest is 10 and I have never studied Tarbiyah in Islam. I think I've always had a good idea of tarbiyah--cultivating the love for Islam in our children throughout our daily life, but I never actually studied it. Just recently, I have taken on a role as part of the administration of our local Islamic Sunday School, Alhamdulillah. So I have all these great teacher workshop ideas and then I think...tarbiyah. I have to learn this to implement it and teach it. So, as I'm doing my own research, I realize that I should've studied this a long time ago....like when I had one child and not four LOL. Every parent should know and understand tarbiyah in raising our children, inshaAllah. May Allah aid us and guide us with the knowledge to teach and raise our children firmly upon the Qur'an and Sunnah and what is pleasing to Him. Ameen!

Please watch this video. MashaAllah, this sister has some valid points that is making me reconsider at 4 in the morning some of my parenting strategies! YIKES!! Astaghfirullah!!

Our Respiratory System Notebooking Pages

We just finished up our Skeletal System Lapbook, Alhamdulillah. We checked out the Your Body and Health: Skeleton book from the library and I really liked the layout and the simplicity. It's not too much information as I've seen in other books and it is appropriate for elementary level. So we checked out their book on "Breathing" and I based our respiratory unit notebooking pages on this book. Hope you like the pages inshaAllah! :)

You can preview some pages on Amazon.

U.S. and World Map Scavenger Hunt Questions

It's been a while since I've posted anything. Alhamdulillah, we went on a mini vacay that started at Muslim Family Day at Six Flags Great Adventure NJ and then visited family in NY and the DC area. It was a nice break but now we are trying to get back into the swing of things, Alhamdulillah.

Today I'm sharing a printable my dear sister friend made up. She's so sweet and patient, mashaAllah. She took her time writing out each question for her 2 children in 2 separate composition notebooks. I loved the questions she came up with but I was not about to write them out sooo here you have it. LOL. I typed it up for me and you! Enjoy!

Promoting a Green Ramadaan at the Masjid!

SubhanAllah, each year we face the same issues in the masjid during Ramadaan......WASTE, WASTE AND MORE WASTE! This year, a sister friend and I have decided to start practicing green habits at iftar! Every night we bring our own plates and utensils in hopes of setting the trend for others to do the same, inshaAllah. We have placed recycling bins for water bottles as well. Here are some posters I made for the masjid. Please do print, share and post at your masjid!

Pinterest

Pinterest. I JUST LOVE PINTEREST! It's what I call productive browsing...if there's such a thing! For homeschoolers, it's a must! If you aren't familiar with it, it's a fun way to bookmark the websites you want to save by a photo from that particular site. You just save the photo (called "pinning") to your personalized boards for easy memory and access. You can organize and categorize the boards as you like.

My Homeschool Classroom

One thing about me is I absolutely love organization and interior design although I'm not so organized and I'm far from an interior designer. W ho out of the millions of pinteresters really do these things in real life anyway?! LOL

Anyway, last week, I turned my classroom upside down and then flipped it over the course of 3 days. Alhamdulillah! I love the layout now and the kids and I are excited to use our classroom! Now that's an accomplishment! :)

Before Pics: the mess I created!!

After pics! Phew! It felt like a never ending pit of junk!

Allah is Al-Lateef

We recently started notebooking and my daughter Nazneen, 10, is literally begging to notebook! Throughout our homeschooling "career" lol I've come across notebooking sites but never looked into it much. Alhamdulillah, I discovered Iman's Homeschool blog and now we are hooked! We have done lapbooks, we use graphic organizers and I like to print worksheets or create my own so notebooking is not something completely new but I like that it is organized and customizable. My 5 and 7 year olds can also participate using the same notebooking pages. It works out because Nazzy loves worksheets while I secretly love printing! LOL. I don't like the cost of course, but I love printables and creating worksheets!

You can read up a little bit on notebooking at Iman's Homeschool blog, inshaAllah.

So, for notebooking this week, we have started learning Allah's names, discussing how it benefits us and how we can live by this name, inshaAllah. Today we learned that Allah is Al-Lateef. We read the wonderful description from UnderstandQuran.com and used Iman's Homeschool notebooking page.
